How to choose the right electric breast pump?
Choosing the right electric breast pump is a personal decision. Consider:
-
How often do you want to pump? For regular pumping, an electric breast pump is faster and more efficient than a manual pump.
-
How important is mobility? A wireless electric breast pump offers you more freedom of movement.
-
How important is comfort? A breast shield that is soft and flexible prevents irritation and promotes better milk flow.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ) about electric breast pumps
How often should I pump?
How often you pump depends on your situation, but there are some useful guidelines. Immediately after birth, it is ideal to pump every 2 to 3 hours, just as a newborn baby feeds frequently. This helps to establish and maintain milk production. Check out our blog "How often should I pump and when?" for more information.
What are the different ways of pumping?
There are three ways to pump:
-
Double pumping: Pumping both breasts simultaneously is faster and optimally stimulates milk production.
-
Single pumping: Here you pump one breast at a time, often with an alternating schedule between the left and right breast.
-
Manual pumping: This can stimulate milk production and is a good supplement to electric pumping.
What should I do if pumping hurts?
Pumping should not cause pain. Always start with a low suction strength and gradually increase it. Make sure the breast shield is the correct size and the nipple is properly positioned to prevent friction. It can help to warm the breast before pumping and gently massage it. For sore nipples, you can use a nipple balm. If pumping remains painful, contact a lactation consultant for guidance.
How long can you pump for a maximum?
Pumping typically takes 10 to 15 minutes per session, especially with double pumping. Pumping longer usually has no effect and can even cause irritation. Stop when the milk flow stops and, if necessary, try again after a short break.
How much milk is normal to pump?
The amount of milk per pumping session varies greatly. Within two weeks of starting to pump, you can expect a milk production of 750 to 1000 ml per 24 hours. An average pumping session often yields about 90 to 120 ml per breast, depending on your baby's needs and the stage after delivery. If you are unable to pump more than 350 ml per day, consult a lactation consultant.
How do you know if your breast is empty?
After pumping, your breast will feel softer and less full, and the milk flow will decrease or stop. You can gently hand express afterwards to check if any milk is still coming out. It is normal for the breast never to be completely "empty," but once the milk flow stops, the breast has been sufficiently emptied for that moment.
How often should you pump at night?
For stable milk production, it is advisable to pump at least once at night, with a maximum break of six hours. This helps maintain production, as the hormone prolactin, which stimulates milk production, is highest at night.
